Artist's Statement

The work featured herein descends from the ceramic figures created by pre-Columbian and oriental cultures of the Pacific basin e.g. Haniwa, Colima, Moche etc. I have used this historical template to address aspects of contemporary dilemmas as they might be addressed in the human figure. These figures could well be characterized as a dialogue between the naked and the nude.

Technically, the figures are constructed using age-old pottery techniques - coil, slab, pinch pot. They are fired coated with terra-sigillata. Terra-sigillata is a solution of very fine clay particles employed most prominently by the Greeks and Romans of antiquity.

About Me

CharlesBrethSculpture
I became enamoured with clay when a friend suggested I attend a throwing demonstration by Peter Voulkos. I enrolled in some classes and went on to receive a M.A{Berkeley} and an M.F.A.[Ohio State]. My work has been featured in shows in both the United States and Canada.
